James Baldwin: A Soul on Fire

From David Dewitt’s NY Times Review, April 12, 2000

Mr. Simon’s script imagines a 1963 morning before Baldwin and his colleagues — the playwright Lorraine Hansberry, the performer Harry Belafonte and the singer Lena Horne — will meet with Robert F. Kennedy, the United States attorney general. ”What shall I wear to meet the man?” Baldwin coos, echoing the title of one of his most serious and horrific short stories. It’s a disarming reference because Baldwin is so plainly excited; Kennedy, he says, ”is so manly.”
