Appear and Show Cause

DECADES of racial segregation in the Army and Navy ended in 1948 with President Truman’s Executive Order 9981 directing ”equality of opportunity for all persons in the armed services.” This directive ignites the action in Stephen Taylor’s two-act courtroom drama, ”Appear and Show Cause.” It is based on a story Mr. Taylor and Leon H. Gildin wrote in 1978 about a 1951 incident in the offices of the Judge Advocate General, United States Army Headquarters, in Stuttgart, West Germany.

The production won an Audelco Award for Best Actor for David Bryant.

Presented as part of the 1985-86 Season

Play opened December 19, 1985 at the Harry De Jur Playhouse
