American Menu

From Anita Gates’ NY Times Review: Mary is traumatized because a boy’s mutilated body has been found near her home. Martha needs to take a day off to have an abortion. Selfish, man-crazy Buella won’t switch days with Martha because she has a baby-related errand of her own. Johnnie Mae is funny and outspoken. Na is older and wiser. And fried chicken is not on the menu today, so they’d all be grateful if people would stop ordering it.

One busy lunch shift for these five co-workers at a Texas diner constitutes Don Wilson Glenn’s ”American Menu,”

The HADLEY Players production, which NFT extended, earned 2002 AUDELCO awards for Don Wilson Glenn (Best Play), Ajene D. Washington (Best Director), and the actors (Best ensemble). Washington also received 2003 Lucille Lortel nomination for best scenic design for the new set in the NFT production.
