Dreams Deferrred

Ethnic Heritage Series

Mr. Holder’s heroes, denizens of the Harlem Young Men’s Christian Association cafeteria in 1935, are blacks who want their share of the white American pie even as they want to retain their own identity and integrity. And there, of course, lies the tragic rub. As a waitress explains to her customers early on, ”You live in a white man’s world, and you pay the price.” The price, whether measured in guilt, self-hatred or lost ideals, can mount up terribly high. –NY Times Review by Frank Rich
