The African Project
Beautiful Things – A Love Story received its world premiere with this production at New Federal Theatre. After Maredi returned to South Africa, this production was staged in October 2001 at the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (MACUFE), an annual showcase of African arts and culture that takes place in Bloemfontein . The same production played two more times: in the Barney Simon Theatre at the Market Theatre, Johannesburg, in December 2001 and at the Baxter Theatre, Cape Town, in October 2002.
In the play, a middle-aged South African man, Muzi (Mr. Maredi), and a younger woman, Noni (Ramadumetja Rasebotsa), both of them widowed, fall in love. These people know a lot about violence, injury and personal loss. But they make no excuses and find none in the grim past of their country or its recent social and political upheavals.
Performances of this production alternated with The Missing Face.
