Sylvia Gassell was an accomplished stage actress who started her professional career in 1952. She was cast as Rosalind in As You Like It, one of the first Shakespeare in the Park productions by Joseph Papp (1957).
Broadway credits include The Basement (1967, with Gene Hackman) and God Bless You, Harold Fineberg (1969).
Gassel, who married director Joel Friedman, continued to work off-Broadway and in the Regions until the 2010s, when she was well into her 80s. She died in 2016 at age 92.
