Motsumi Makhene

Motsumi Makhene is an arts educator, a composer, an arranger, a poet, lyricist and producer; a visual artist.. He is credited with composing music for Goree.

Motsumi composed original music for Sibangile Khumalo, a beloved singer, and a performer in Goree.

Mr Makhene is a Chairperson of the International Jazz Day South Africa, a trustee of the Khabi Mngoma Foundation (for community music education and indigenous music research, preservation and promotion); he is the Chairperson of Funda Community College, (for the promotion of community education and social entrepreneurship through the arts, technology and adult education, and early childhood development); Chairperson of the Spin Foundation (for the promotion of international cooperation in the arts, with emphasis on music, exchanges, competitions and festivals); Member of the SAMRO Foundation (for the preservation, advocacy and funding of music commissions, grants and bursaries); Chairperson of the Institute for African Innovation (IFAI) (for research and modeling of solutions in youth workforce and entrepreneurship development through incubations and internships).

Together with Mokale Koapeng, Sibongile Khumalo and Hugh Masekela, Motsumi Makhene co-composed the music of Milestones, a musical by Mandla Langa. The musical premiered at the Grahamstown Festival and had a run at the State Theatre, winning the 1999 FNB SAMA’s Best Soundtrack Award.
