Mike Sargent has worked behind the camera in a variety of ways as a Composer, Sound Designer, Producer, Storyboard artist (Illegal Tender, The Ministers ), Screenwriter, & Director.
A graduate of the High School of Art & Design and Parson’s School of Design as an Illustrator, Mike Sargent started his career in Theatre and Film as a sound designer. He was nominated several times for the prestigious Audelco Award for excellence in Sound Design. From there Mike went on to write, produce and direct radio drama and audio books, adapting the works of such acclaimed science-fiction authors as Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clark. Mike has been the recipient of a series of grants to develop his feminist-science-fiction play Nemesis
In 1997 his short film, The Lesson, premiered to critical acclaim at the Visions of New Black filmmaker’s Festival. His debut feature film Personals (aka Hook’d Up), which he wrote and directed, was the opening night film at the 1999 Los Angeles’ Pan African Film Festival.
Sargent is the Producer/Host of WBAI-FM’s popular long running late night magazine/talk show Niteshift and as chief film critic for WBAI hosts Reelworld, an all film related weekly program. Mike regularly appears on numerous Television shows, radio programs, and podcasts as a nationally quoted film and entertainment critic. He is a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association [BFCA] Mike is also a co-founder and co-president of the Black Film Critics Circle [BFCC].
Mike is completing Bad Boys: A Documentary (2018) , an in-depth, investigative film that examines why women and society in general are in love with ‘bad boys’ and have been throughout history.
