Jimmy Smith arrived in New York in 1973 from Cleveland, Ohio, where he received early drama training at Karamu House. He studied in New York at the Drama Workshop at Henry Street. He appeared on Broadway in We Interrupt this Program in 1975, and in numerous Off-Broadway productions including So Nice they named it Twice at the Public Theatre.
