Ernest Baxter was a lighting designer who worked off-Broadway and received an AUDELCO Black Theatre Recognition Award at the first award ceremony in 1973.
Most of his career is absent from the Internet. He made his first appearance in 1964 as an actor in a production of The Old Glory at St. Mark’s playhouse. Then nothing until he reappears as a lighting designer in 1970. He’s listed as lighting designer for 10 productions during the two-year period from March 1970 to April 1972, with 8 productions at the St. Mark’s Playhouse, one at the Theater at St. Clement’s Church, and one in the Public Theater Annex.
In 1972 he became the resident lighting designer of Frank Silvera Writers’ Workshop Foundation, Inc. He was also on the staff of WNET-TV, the public television station in NYC, and was stage manager for SOUL!
The Internet record is silent after that until, in 1997, the board of directors, staff and membership of Frank Silvera Writers’ Workshop Foundation, Inc., “proudly presented him a special lifetime achievement award,” presumably as he retired.
