Prior to becoming an actor, Emily Yancy was working at NYU Medical Center operating an electron microscope.
She started performing on television in 1963 and was still going strong as of 2018. Of her few cinematic efforts, two were notable—the blaxploitation classics Cotton Comes to Harlem and Blacula. Her small screen appearances include Starsky & Hutch, The Mod Squad, and MacGyver.
Her big break came on Broadway with the 1967 production of Hello Dolly! when Pearl Bailey took over the title role with an all-black cast, and Yancy was cast in the role of Mrs. Malloy. Many stage appearances followed, notably including the role as a replacement for Dulcinea with Richard Kiley in the original production of Man of La Mancha.
