Dan Kotlowitz joined the Dartmouth faculty in the winter of 1995 as the Lighting Designer for the Theater Department. In 2000 he was the Melville Straus Fellow, in 2008 he was awarded the John M. Manley Huntington Memorial Award for outstanding teaching and research, and in 2010 he was the Petit Family Fellow.
Mr. Kotlowitz has designed over 200 professional productions, his work has been seen in New York at the New York Shakespeare Festival, Manhattan Theatre Club, Julliard Theatre, Primary Stages, Playwrights Horizons, The Astor Place, The Promenade Theatre, The Joyce Theatre, Serious Fun! Festival at Lincoln Center, New Federal Theatre, Soho Rep and AMAS Rep.
He has designed in LORT theaters all over the country including: Centerstage, Hartford Stage, The Long Wharf, Huntington Theatre, Trinity Repertory, LaJolla Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Berkeley Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Capitol Repertory, Merrimack Repertory Theatre, Virginia Stage Company, Shakespeare and Company, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Connecticut Rep Theater, and the George Street Playhouse. Past designs include: AH WILDERNESS at Centerstage in Baltimore, MACBETH at the Berkshire Theatre Festival, CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION at the Huntington Theatre in Boston, and 12 ANGRY MEN at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis.
His design work for performance artist Diamanda Gala’s PLAGUE MASS, INSEKTA, TICKETS and THE SPORTING LIFE have been seen nationally and internationally in Paris, London, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Spain, Italy, Lithuania, Norway and Greece.
He is a member of United Scenic Artist, Local 829, and received his B.A. from Grinnell College, and an M.F.A. in lighting design from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Professor Kotlowitz teaches Lighting Design, Composition for the Theater, a new course called: Creativity and Collaboration, and he designs lights and projections for main stage productions.
