Charles Maryan

(Chuck), December 30, 1934, to November 4, 2018. Chuck died in Manhattan of complications from surgery. The son of the late Dr. Harry O. and Hazel Sinaiko Maryan, he was born in Chicago, Il, and was a graduate of Francis W. Parker and Dartmouth College. In New York, he studied acting with Sandy Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse and then Stella Adler. While working for Sol Hurok with Barrault and Renaud, he met Sarah Sanders and they married and had a daughter, Abigael, who survives him. Sarah and Chuck later divorced. It was while directing a production of Sleuth in Tarkio, MO, in 1976, that Chuck fell in love with his costume designer, Lana Fritz, whose striking red hair and unique sense of humor had him at hello. Lana and Chuck were quickly inseparable. The 42 joyful years they shared were filled with numerous collaborations in theater and opera, a great circle of lifelong friends, and three beloved cats. Charles first worked as an actor and stage manager, and later became a theater director, a career he pursued with passion for more than fifty years.
