A. C. Tony Smith is a Chicago actor who performs frequently at the Court Theatre, including many of their August Wilson productions. He won the 2006 Joseph Jefferson Award for Actor in a Principal Role in a Play for “Fences.” He performed in the national tour of The Piano Lesson, directed by Lloyd Richards.
Outside of Chicago, he has worked regionally at Writers, Clarence Brown Theatre, Portland Stage Company, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Milwaukee Rep, Kansas City Rep, Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, Indiana Rep, and Geva Theatre Centre (among others). He is a company member of The Black Rep, where he’s won 9 Woodie King Jr. awards.
He won an AUDELCO nomination for his performance in Jelly Belly at NFT.
He appeared as “Sheepskin Red” (credited as A.C. Smith) in Robert Altman’s 1994 Film Kansas City, with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Miranda Richardson, and Harry Belafonte.
