Irma-Estel LaGuerre

Irma-Estel LaGuerre was born in New York City and is of Aztec and Taino heritage. She graduated from the Manhattan School of Music with a Masters of Music degree in opera and theater. After graduation, she went on to pursue a career in theatre and music, which has run the gamut from musical comedy to drama. A gifted actress/singer, Irma’s performances have earned her critical acclaim on and off Broadway. Ms. LaGuerre just finished portraying the role of Carlota in Night Over Taos directed by Ms. Estelle Parsons for INTAR

Ms. LaGuerre was mesmerizing in the production of Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass.  She performed in the musical both on Broadway and on the international tour. In the Broadway version, she undertook the role of the ‘The Singer’  and a song was written especially for her. On the international tour, she played the lead role of ‘The Mother’, which earned her a nomination for San Francisco’s Theatre Critic Circle Award. Also in Irma’s repertoire is the role of Lady Thiang in The King and I. She has performed the role twice: first with Yul Brynner on Broadway and later she reprised the role with Rudolf Nureyev in national tour. Both performances received accolades.

Ms. LaGuerre was memorable in Carlos Morton’s Puerto Rican Traveling Company production of  El Jardin as Eva. As Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz, Ms LaGuerre thrilled audiences in Suenos with her interpretation of Herschel Garfeins’s demanding compositions. Her accomplishments range beyond her Native American/Latin origins to include roles of Julie in both Showboat and Carousel.  She excelled as Teresina in Will Holt’s Walk on the Wild Side and as Susana in  The Girl in the Picture.  Irma has also performed in Central and South America with Repertorio Espanol interpreting roles of Luisa in The Fantastiks and Lucrezia in La Celestina, a Lorca play. Next year, Ms LaGuerre will be seen in the independent feature Buzz Kill , where she plays ‘Mama’, a Navajo woman.

Irma has also appeared in numerous commercials, and print ads. She has appeared on  ‘All my Children’ (Carmen) and had a recurring role on the ABC children’s series ‘City Kids’. She can be seen in reruns of Law and Order in ‘The Healer’ episode and on ‘The Sopranos’ as the Native American Woman One. Irma is involved in the performance of new works by Indigenous writers and is actively involved in the opening of a new museum – Nitchen Children’s Museum of Native America.
