Michael A. Jones’ 2008 work portrays Josh Gibson, the legendary real-life Negro Leagues catcher who belted tape-measure homers but died of a stroke, at age 35, just months before baseball’s color line was broken. Gibson played for the Homestead Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords; in Josh, Gibson and his friend, famed pitcher Satchel Paige, sort out life and baseball.
