Tom Bullard is chairman of the Brooklyn College Theatre Department. Professor Bullard, who holds an MFA in directing from Yale University, is a founding director of the Manhattan Theatre Club. During his tenure at MTC he received an Audelco Award for his direction of Richard Wesley’s The Last Street Play, starring Morgan Freeman, and an Obie Award for his American premiere production of Statements After an Arrest Under Immorality Act by Athol Fugard.
Among numerous MTC productions was the world premiere of Strange Snow by Stephen Metcalfe (subsequently made into the film Jackknife, with Robert DeNiro, Ed Harris, and Kathy Baker). Actors he directed at MTC include Morgan Freeman, F. Murray Abraham, Dylan Baker, Patricia Clarkson, Denzel Washington, Henry Winkler, James Whitmore, Audra Lindley, Michael Tucker, and Margaret Whitton. New York credits include Aishah Rahman’s Unfinished Women at Joseph Papp’s Public Theatre; Romulus Linney’s Woman Without a Name at the Signature Theatre; Linney’s “2” at Primary Stages (which he originally directed as a world premiere at Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Humana Festival and also staged at the Williamstown Theatre Festival); Linney’s Patronage, starring Chris Noth and Dana Reeve, at Ensemble Studio Theatre; and Fugard’s Sizwe Bansi is Dead, and Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape at the 78th Street Theatre Lab and the Lincoln Center Institute. Recently, Professor Bullard directed the world premiere of Wynton Marsalis’ and Diane Lampert’s Suite for Human Nature at Jazz at Lincoln Center and at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington DC.
Professor Bullard has directed at many of the nation’s other major theatres, including the Old Globe Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Chicago’s Goodman Theatre and Northlight Theatre, the Alley Theatre, the George Street Playhouse, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Syracuse Stage, Cincinnati Playhouse, the Walnut Street Theatre, and the Coconut Grove Playhouse. He is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, served two terms as a Trustee of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation, and is currently a Trustee of Sightlines Theatre in New York City. As a Teaching Artist with the Lincoln Center Institute from its inception in 1975 through most of the next decade, he helped create many of the guiding principles that continue to shape its programs. Professor Bullard was honored with a Murray Koppelman Professorship for 2001-2003, and currently holds the Bernard B. Stern Professorship in Humor for 2005-2007.
