James Weldon Johns was a Harlem lawyer, social activist, and lyricist, and a major force during the first Harlem Renaissance. A leading author, his first major literary success was the Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man (1912). His best known work is God’s Trombone (1927).
Johnson was Executive Director of the NAACP from 1920 to 1931 and is world renowned for composing the lyrics of the Negro National Anthem, Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing -Forever Harlem
