Bruce Strickland played Martin Luther King in I have a Dream. He was a highly regarded musical theater actor who made his Broadway debut in Inacent Black, starring Melba Moore in 1981. Much of his work took place out of town on Broadway “touring companies” such as Hair and Escape to Freedom by Ossie Davis. Lortel Archive lists two NY roles: One Mo’ Time at the Village Gate (which was an extended hit, and immediately preceded Inacent Black), and Saints Alive at Actors’ Playhouse, both 1979.
Laurence Holder described Bruce’s performance this way, “HOT FINGERS is about the great and only Jelly Roll Morton, the man who invented jazz. He was portrayed at Virgil Atkins’ Vital Arts Center by the one and only, and most fantastic, Bruce Strickland.”
