Charles Henry McClennahan

Charles Henry McClennahan is perhaps best known as the Scenic Designer for the world premiere of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at Yale Rep in 1984, who followed the production to Broadway at the Cort Theatre later that year. He has substantial experience mostly in Off Broadway and regional theaters, including Second Stage, Manhattan Theatre Club, The Working Theatre, and the Public Theatre in New York. Regionally, he’s worked at the Goodman Theatre (Chcago), Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Crossroads Theatre (New Brunswick, NJ), and the Landsburgh Theater in Washington, DC.

Charles was a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, where he won the Donald Oenslager scholarship in set design. He also received a Graduate Student Commitment Award from the Afro-American Cultural Center at Yale.
