Tate was nominated for an OBIE Award for his off-Broadway performance in “The Cherry Orchard.” According to IMDb, he appeared in Shaft (1971), Coriolanus (1979) and No Place to Hide (1973). He died on January 3, 1993 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
He filed a $10 million suit against the city of Los Angeles over a police shooting.
Tate was shot in the leg by Los Angeles police officer Garland Hardeman on March 23, 1991, after Hardeman and his partner, officer Semmie Reid, found the actor asleep in what they thought was an abandoned house.
At the time, the actor had not been able to find work and was staying in the house in South Los Angeles while the owner was out of town. Police were called to the location to investigate a report of a dead body.
